AllianceHealth Clinton Launches New Bariatric Surgery Program
7/24/2017
Clinton, OK – July 17, 2017 – AllianceHealth Clinton is now offering bariatric weight loss surgery. Oklahomans in Northwest Oklahoma now have a surgical weight loss provider offering minimally invasive procedures. Tannous Fakhry, M.D. who is fellowship trained in Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery, started offering the sleeve gastrectomy earlier this month. A sleeve gastrectomy is a restrictive surgical weight loss procedure that reduces the size of the stomach and is performed laparoscopically.
Obesity contributes to the risk of developing serious medical conditions including respiratory and cardiac problems, depression, and cancer and is the second leading cause of preventable death in the United States. Losing weight can be difficult and for people who have 100 pounds or more to lose, it can be even more challenging. For some, weight-loss surgery may offer a solution where other methods have failed. Bariatric surgery can be life transforming, offering individuals an opportunity to lead a more active and satisfying life.
The journey begins with a free weight loss seminar where doctor and patient will decide if they are candidates for a sleeve gastrectomy. The free seminar will be held Tuesday, August 1st at 7 p.m. in the Weichel Conference Center. Sign up by calling the Bariatric Coordinator at (580) 331-1432. Patients will receive a checklist of preoperative requirements that must be met prior to bariatric surgery at their first appointment with Dr. Fakhry. During consecutive appointments, they will meet with the surgeon to discuss further consultations or tests that need to be performed prior to surgery and discuss lifestyle changes needed for long-term weight control.
A sleeve gastrectomy, or gastric sleeve bypass, is a restrictive surgical weight loss procedure that reduces the size of the stomach and is usually performed through a small, minimally invasive incision. During the procedure, a thin vertical sleeve of the stomach is created using a stapling device, and the rest of the stomach is removed. The sleeve is about the size of a banana. This procedure limits the amount of food the patient can eat and helps them feel full sooner. Because food does not bypass any of the intestines, there is no malabsorption. Since this procedure removes most of the stomach, the “appetite hormone” created by the stomach is reduced and hunger is reduced.
“We offer an encompassing program that’s more than just surgery. Patients receive education on nutrition, exercise, and instructions for before and after surgery. They must sign a letter of commitment to insure they are ready to make a lifestyle change and do their part,” said Dr. Fakhry, “We help them with any physical, emotional and other challenges that might arise.”
