AllianceHealth Deaconess introduces technology to Oklahoma City Metro that improves patient comfort during cath lab procedures.
AllianceHealth Deaconess, Accredited Chest Pain Center, announced today that it the first hospital in the Oklahoma City Metro to offer Instant Wave-Free Ratio (iFR) Modality for patients with heart blockages. When a patient has a blockage in their heart, it often requires intervention to open the vessel and return blood flow to treat and prevent a heart attack. Traditional methods (FFR or Fractional Flow Reserve) require the cardiologist to inject medications that stress the heart to properly identify where a stent needs to be placed. At AllianceHealth Deaconess, patients have access to iFR technology that provides the cardiologist a physiologic measurement to identify stent placement while avoiding the injection of medicines that induce stress to the patient’s heart. This removes the risk of unpleasant patient side effects during the procedure including: chest discomfort, difficulty breathing, flushing and nausea.
“Looks can be deceiving. A two-dimensional image of a heart vessel can give a misperception of a blockage to be significant,” stated Raghav Gupta, MD, FACC , Medical Director of Cardiac Cath Lab at AllianceHealth Deaconess. “Using iFR, I can obtain true physiological data within the heart without any additional medication use.”
Most importantly, with the increase in efficiency, iFR provides a reduction in procedure time required to properly identify blockages. The reduced procedure time allows the cardiologist the ability to adequately assess borderline blockages in patients with severe obstructive lung disease, slow heart rate, heart block and medication non-responders, which was previously not possible with traditional technology. “The impact is tremendous,” added Dr. Gupta. “There is a possibility of avoiding open heart surgery because iFR reveals adequate blood flow to the heart muscle without significantly increasing the procedure duration.”
