3D Technology has chance to catch disease at earlier, more treatable stages.
AllianceHealth Woodward has announced the installation of new 3-D mammography equipment at the facility in Woodward, making the advanced technology available to the patients in the region. The hospital is the first facility within 75 miles of Woodward to offer the advanced technology that can aid in the early detection of breast cancer.
Statistics indicate that one in eight women will develop breast cancer sometime in her lifetime. The stage at which breast cancer is detected influences a woman’s chance of survival. If breast cancer is detected early, a patient’s five-year survival rate is 98 percent.
Because this new technology represents a significant improvement in the performance of standard mammography, AllianceHealth Woodward expects to improve early detection for women with dense or fatty breasts.
Studies say when 3D mammography is combined with conventional 2D mammography, cancer detection rates are higher than with conventional 2D mammography alone. At the same time, the recall rates are reduced, meaning fewer patients are called back unnecessarily.
The 3D mammography screening experience is similar to a traditional mammogram. During a 3D mammography exam, multiple low dose images of the breast are taken at different angles. These images are then combined to recreate a series of one-millimeter thick slices that can be viewed as a 3D reconstruction of the breast.
“AllianceHealth Woodward CEO Ross Korkmas states “We are committed to the fight against breast cancer. In offering 3D mammography and digital mammography, our facility provides advanced imaging technology, that aids us in this fight”.
